چکیده

This paper focuses on several aspects of the UASATM interaction that have not been previously addressed: separation assurance, contingency reaction and lost link procedures; as well as the evaluation of the trade-off between automated and autonomous UAS operations. These aspects will definitely determine the effectiveness of the UAS integration performing the aforementioned surveillance missions. Our research intents to investigate such relationships and how current ADS-B or future technology may support them. Beyond the conceptual perspective, a simulation environment is being developed to provide functional and quantitative measures to the study of the UAS– ATM interaction. UAS operations are modeled and reproduced in great detail through a wide set of real-time simulations. UAS behavior is being coupled with an ATC simulation environment that will allow to explore the UAS behavior to contingencies, conflicting traffic and ATC requests in real time.

Computational Concerns in the Integration of Unmanned Airborne Systems into Controlled Airspace

Unmanned Airborne Systems (UAS) offer significant benefits for long duration missions. They can also be used in situations where it is inappropriate to expose aircrew to increased levels of risk. Partly in consequence, they continue to experience accident rates that are significantly higher than those for most conventional aircraft. It can also be argued that increased mishap rates are due to l...

Formal Methods in Air Traffic Management: The Case of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Invited Lecture)

As the technological and operational capabilities of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) continue to grow, so too does the need to introduce these systems into civil airspace. Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration in the National Airspace System is a NASA research project that addresses the integration of civil UAS into non-segregated airspace operations. One of the major challenges of this integra...

A Path Planning Algorithm to Enable Well-Clear Low Altitude UAS Operation Beyond Visual Line of Sight

The availability of reliable and efficient algorithms to avoid obstacles, geofences, and other traffic is an essential functionality for safe autonomous operation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in low altitude airspace beyond visual line of sight. This paper presents a path planning algorithm that enables UAS to fly specified missions while accommodating real time traffic and geofence const...

Mid-Air Collision Avoidance Principles

Unmanned Aircraft Systems are about to replace human pilots not only in dangerous, dull or tedious missions but generally where the human being is the limiting factor including size and economic issues. There is a wide range of applications for which UAVs have to be operated in non-segregated airspace in general and uncontrolled airspace in particular, regardless of civil, governmental or milit...

Evaluating the Impact of Deploying Unrestricted Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the National Airspace

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) can be used for scientific, emergency management, and defense missions, among others. The existing federal air regulations, procedures, and technologies do not allow routine UAS access to the National Airspace System (NAS), with the UAS being flown primarily within restricted airspaces. The current Certificate of Waiver of Authorization (COA) process requirement ...
